A fuel by means of plasma

The CO₂ emission strategies and net-zero targets of many countries call for a disruptive rethink in the use of fossil fuels. The example of the cement and lime industry shows how easily fossil fuels and their CO₂ emissions can be saved with Alnewa’s plasma process – without the use of H₂ technologies!
Investment in cost-intensive H₂ electrolysis and the associated infrastructure is not necessary with the plasma process, as existing operating facilities and technologies can continue to be used. CAPEX and OPEX costs thus remain manageable.


The situation today

A conventional combustion process using fossil fuels such as natural gas (CH₄) emits large quantities of carbon dioxide (CO₂). In cement production, some of this CO₂ comes from the raw materials and geogenic sources, but a large proportion is required by the fuel needed for the high-temperature kilns.


Fuel gas production through CO₂ upcycling

Alnewa uses a high-performance plasma directly in the CO₂-rich exhaust gas stream of its production plant. The plasma “converts” the CO₂ released from the raw material into a combustible mixture of CO and O₂, which can then be fed back into the process as fuel. This turns the CO₂ into a fuel – without the need to add H₂ and the known efficiency losses.

Our innovative plasma technology uses electricity to convert CO₂ into a valuable, high-calorific fuel gas – in a closed cycle. The recycled CO₂ can be used continuously as fuel, replacing fossil fuels and drastically reducing emissions.

A decisive advantage: as a large proportion of the CO₂ comes from geogenic sources due to the process, the efficiency of the system does not even have to be extremely high to achieve significant savings. At the same time, there are no costs for CO₂ certificates from fossil fuels, as the geogenic CO₂ is directly recycled.

Instead of disposing of the CO₂ at great expense, Alnewa relies on recycling. This saves energy and emissions at the same time.

For the ongoing recycling of the fuel, the heating process must initially be initiated with fossil fuel. Our recycled fuel then replaces the fossil gas.

Because the CO₂ is continuously recycled, emissions of the greenhouse gas are drastically reduced. As a result, significantly fewer CO₂ certificates are required.
